Strategic Vision & Core Mission
The Center's mission is to harness the advanced scientific, analytical, and research capabilities of Cairo University to serve sustainable economic and environmental development goals in Egypt and the Arab world, mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change, natural hazards, and industrial emissions.
Approved Detailed Objectives of the Center (15 Strategic Goals):
- Establishing and Developing Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Building integrated GIS spatial databases to correlate environmental, geological, and monitoring station telemetry with digital interactive mapping.
- Geotechnical Soil & Rock Foundation Characterization: Conducting mechanical and engineering testing on soil and bedrock for infrastructure projects and national mega-developments.
- Preparing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Studies: Delivering accredited EIA studies for industrial, tourism, petroleum, and infrastructure projects to obtain Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) approvals.
- Applying the Egyptian Seismic Building Code: Assessing regional seismic activity and earthquake hazard microzonation to safeguard critical infrastructure and buildings.
- Advanced Chemical & Spectroscopic Diagnostics: Analyzing drinking water, industrial wastewater, solid wastes, and soil matrices according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
- Hydrogeological Surveys & Groundwater Protection: Exploring aquifer reserves, protecting groundwater from contamination and over-extraction, and mapping flash flood channels.
- Operating Mobile Air Quality Laboratories: Measuring ambient air pollutants, fugitive emissions, and stack exhausts directly at industrial field locations nationwide.
- Hosting the UNEP Basel Convention Regional Center: Supporting environmentally sound management of hazardous wastes and transferring environmental technologies across 22 Arab States.
- Formulating Environmental Registers & Hazardous Waste Tracking Logs: Assisting industrial facilities in maintaining compliance registers pursuant to Article 22 of Law 4/1994.
- Executing Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Field Measurements: Assessing workplace noise levels, lighting intensity, heat stress (WBGT), and respirable particulate matter across production facilities.
- Periodic Calibration of Analytical Instruments: Providing certified calibration services for gas analyzers and emission sensors in coordination with the National Institute of Standards (NIS).
- Delivering 24/7 Technical Maintenance & Support: Maintaining continuous operation of ambient air and environmental noise monitoring telemetry stations around the clock.
- Capacity Building & Professional Training: Organizing accredited training workshops for university students, engineers, and industrial safety officers.
- Carbon Footprint Consulting & ESG Reporting: Quantifying corporate greenhouse gas emissions and authoring ESG sustainability reports conforming to ISO 14064 standards.
- Environmental Decision Support: Supplying scientific scenarios, mathematical models, and evidence-based solutions to national policymakers for emission reduction.
